LEWIS DAVIES
EXPOSURE
This short film was made for my exposure session and the reflection showing. I was being experimental on this one by showing some underwater footage from the beach to the wildlife while adding some other footage to make it look surreal.
The film is called “Sea and Sky”, which shows some footage of the sea and the sky but combined together with the help of bluescreen effects.
Since I have to make a short film based on the topic of reflection, I have to find a way to make a film like that. I was thinking of going with mirrors or cards since they have some reflection to them, but I finally settle to make a film on water, either sea or river. With some footage I have, I messed around with the bluescreen effects on the sky of the footage, to give a more surreal look, such as the plane flying through underwater. I also added some filters to make look more aesthetic. The Shots from the film were taken on the beaches of Jersey Island, the puddle at the beginning was from my home and some of the shots of the river were from the park of Crosskeys which has some beautiful imagery of nature. The music I chose for the film is Ralph Vaughan William’s musical piece, “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis”. It was personally one of my favorite classical music pieces and seeing that my short film has some aesthetic shots, I thought it would be more fitting if I use this piece for the film. I also used this piece to think about some memories I have from my younger years while looking at the sea and sky.
I feel like I could have done something better for the film but I want it to be completely focused on the topic that I was given. If I have some more blue sky shots I would push further into my film to make it look not just surreal but more abstract. Some of the other ideas I could have done for this film, I wish I would include some animation to it, either hand drawn or stop motion. But due to time and some planning, I scrapped it. I feel like if I have a bit more time on this film, I would make some animations while combining the live-action shots from underwater.
While it’s not one of the best short films I have ever done, I still think I can give some artistry to it when it comes to reflection or Exposure.
